Gombe Stream National Park
The Birthplace of Chimpanzee Research
profound historical and scientific significance. Located on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, Gombe is the smallest of Tanzania’s national parks, but it carries the largest legacy as the site where Dr. Jane Goodall began her revolutionary studies of wild chimpanzees in 1960.
A visit here is a pilgrimage for primatologists, nature lovers, and anyone seeking an intimate, life-changing encounter with chimpanzees in the very place that defined primate behavior science.
The Living Laborator
Gombe is a narrow strip of rugged, forested terrain stretching along the shore of Lake Tanganyika, accessible only by boat. The steep valleys and open grasslands make for a beautiful and challenging trek, but the reward is spending time with chimpanzees who have been studied for over six decades. This is the site of the longest-running study of a wild animal species in the world, focusing on the Kasakela community.
