Marangu village: The Gates of Kilimanjaro
The journey through time and culture
Marangu is one of the most famous and picturesque villages in Tanzania, known globally as the “Gateway to Kilimanjaro.” Perched on the fertile, lower slopes of Africa’s highest peak, the air here is noticeably cooler, and the landscape is a vibrant tapestry of lush rainforests, coffee plantations, and ancient history.
This area on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro serves as a historical and cultural center defined by the heritage of the Chagga people. The landscape features 18th-century underground defense tunnels used during tribal conflicts and the Ndoro Waterfalls, which are reached via a hike through local coffee and banana groves. The primary experiences include participating in traditional “bean-to-cup” Arabica coffee processing, visiting the historic Marangu Gate where summit expeditions begin, and sampling regional staples such as traditional Chagga cuisine and Mbege (banana beer).

FAQ
Will I see the "Big Five" on a day trip?
Tanzania offers incredible opportunities to see the African “Big Five” – the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. The Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the best places on earth to see them all in a single day.
Are these trips suitable for children?
Absolutely. Most of our day trips are family-friendly. However, for long safari drives or the waterfall hike, we recommend children be 5 years or older to fully enjoy the experience.
Is the hike to Materuni Waterfalls difficult?
The hike is considered moderate. It takes about 30–45 minutes each way. The paths can be muddy or slippery after rain, so sturdy shoes with good grip are highly recommended.
Can I buy coffee or local crafts during the tour?
Yes! You will have the opportunity to buy fresh, organic coffee beans directly from the farmers or handmade crafts from village artisans. We recommend bringing some Tanzanian Shillings (TSH) for these small purchases.
